Erika Harris, Director of Community Relations, left; Branch Leader Paula Medeiros, Senior District Leader Bill Worling, Lake County Commissioner Debbie Stivender and Beth Work, executive director of Boys and Girls Club of Lake and Sumter counties.

The club has been helping kids in Lake and Sumter Counties find a better way to spend their time since 1973, working with more than 300 children a day. Project Learn reinforces and enhances the skills and knowledge young people learn at school during the hours they spend at the club. Through Project Learn, club staffers create opportunities for high-yield learning activities, including leisure reading, writing, discussions with knowledgeable adults, homework help, tutoring and games like Scrabble that develop young people’s cognitive skills. Project Learn also emphasizes parent involvement and collaboration between Club and school professionals. Amscot’s contribution will support Project Learn.

During the Amscot open house event, children’s entertainment will be provided by stiltwalker and facepainter Caroline Roe.  Radio station XL106.7 will broadcast live from Amscot’s parking lot and give away prizes.  Free refreshments also will be provided.

At the Amscot grand opening, the Child Protection Education of America, Inc. (CPEA), a national nonprofit organization for missing children based in Tampa, will also be available on site to provide free fingerprinting for children through their “ID ME NOW” program.

The program produces a state-of-the-art, specially designed card for parents to keep.  The card contains a set of the child’s digital fingerprints, a black and white photo, a dental chart, and instructions on how to do a simple DNA collection.  Safety brochures are provided with the fingerprint card, as well as an envelope containing further information on how to complete the child safety kit.

This information can assist parents and law enforcement officers involved with a missing child case.  An interactive child safety CD-ROM can also be purchased for $5 at the event with profits going to the CPEA for creating the CD-ROM.
